Pathology

Department of Pathology

Pathology is the cornerstone of modern medicine, providing the essential bridge between basic science and clinical care by uncovering the nature, causes and progression of diseases. At its core, it is the meticulous scientific study of how diseases originate, develop and affect the human body. This is done through knowledge obtained through detailed examination of organs, tissues, bodily fluids and cells, often under the microscope and increasingly with the aid of sophisticated molecular and digital technologies.

The Department of Pathology at the University of Health and Allied Sciences holds a central role in the healthcare delivery system, offering indispensable diagnostic services that inform accurate clinical decision-making and guide effective treatment strategies. Our expertise spans the full spectrum of anatomical and clinical pathology, with specialised capabilities in histopathology, cytology, haematology, immunohistochemistry, molecular diagnostics and forensic pathology. By integrating these sub-disciplines, we provide comprehensive insights into disease processes, enabling early detection, accurate classification, prognosis evaluation and therapeutic monitoring.

Our laboratories are equipped with advanced technologies, including automated tissue processors, digital slide scanners and molecular assay platforms, which allow us to investigate disease mechanisms at the molecular, cellular and tissue levels. These facilities also serve as training grounds for students, fostering proficiency in both traditional and cutting-edge diagnostic methods while instilling the highest standards of laboratory safety, ethics and quality control.

Beyond diagnostics, the Department is deeply invested in research that addresses urgent challenges in global health, such as the identification of novel disease biomarkers, the study of cancer biology, the monitoring of infectious disease outbreaks and the development of rapid, cost-effective diagnostic tools. Through collaborative partnerships with hospitals, research institutes and public health agencies, we ensure that our scientific discoveries are translated into tangible improvements in patient care and population health.

In addition to its academic and research mandates, the Department contributes to community health through outreach initiatives such as cancer awareness campaigns, public health education and forensic investigations that support the justice system. By uniting scientific precision, innovative research and service to society, the Department of Pathology not only advances medical science but also strengthens the foundation of healthcare in Ghana and beyond.

Mission
To train students in the diagnosis of diseases through advanced laboratory analysis and to conduct innovative research into disease mechanisms, thereby enhancing clinical decision-making and patient care.

Vision
To be a world-class centre for pathology education and research, setting the benchmark for diagnostic excellence and scientific discovery.

Functions
The Department of Pathology plays a pivotal role in bridging the gap between laboratory science and clinical medicine, ensuring that students acquire both the theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary for accurate disease diagnosis and effective patient management.

Through structured teaching in anatomical pathology and clinical pathology, the Department trains future healthcare professionals to:

Examine tissue, blood and body fluids with precision.

Interpret complex laboratory findings.

Integrate diagnostic results into holistic patient care plans.

The Department provides a wide scope of diagnostic services, including:

  • Histopathology
  • Cytology
  • Haematology
  • Immunohistochemistry
  • Molecular diagnostics
  • Forensic pathology

These services deliver critical information for early disease detection, staging, prognosis assessment and treatment monitoring.

Students also benefit from hands-on experience in state-of-the-art laboratories, applying advanced technologies such as:

  • Digital pathology
  • Automated tissue processing
  • Molecular assays

All training is conducted under strict quality control standards, preparing graduates for real-world professional demands.

In terms of research, the Department focuses on addressing pressing challenges in disease diagnosis and management, including:

  • Development of novel diagnostic biomarkers.
  • Improvement of laboratory workflows.
  • Integration of artificial intelligence into pathology practice.

Collaborative projects with hospitals, research institutes and public health agencies ensure that laboratory discoveries are translated into practical clinical and community health solutions.

Beyond academics and research, the Department is active in public health outreach, promoting awareness of disease prevention, cancer screening and early detection initiatives. It also supports the professional growth of healthcare providers by hosting workshops, seminars, and conferences on the latest advances in diagnostic science.

By combining rigorous training, innovative research, and service excellence, the Department of Pathology ensures that graduates are not only technically proficient but also capable of advancing medical diagnostics and improving patient outcomes in Ghana and beyond.
