Entry Requirements

Graduate Entry Medical Programme (GEMP)

Admission requirements into GEMP in the School of Medicine

1. Applicants should have a BSc or equivalent First Degree with a minimum GPA of 2.5 (second class lower) in the following science-based programmes: Physician Assistantship, Pharmacy, Nursing, Biological Sciences, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Nutrition, Dietetics, Food Science, Biomedical Engineering, Laboratory Sciences, Physiotherapy, Agricultural Science, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine or Radiography etc.

2. Candidates should have also obtained a WASSCE (or equivalent) aggregate of 16 or better in three (3) core and three (3) elective science subjects. Candidates with a GPA of 3 or more will be considered without consideration of their WASSCE grades, but these students should have done at least 2 general science subjects in their WASSCE exams.

3. International applicants should have obtained a pass in English Language at the GCSE Ordinary level (or equivalent examination) or a score of at least 7 for the Academic International English Language Test System (IELTS). Additionally, students should not score below 6.0 in any of the modules (reading, writing, speaking, and listening).

4. All shortlisted students would write a personal statement about why they wish to become physicians, which should be submitted to the School of Medicine. 

5. Additionally, attendance at a 4-week access course, entrance examination, and interview is mandatory for all shortlisted applicants. The course will take place at the University of Health and Allied Sciences, School of Medicine, Ho, for 6 hours a day (total 104 hours).

The aim of these courses is to teach and examine important concepts before students embark on the GEMP programme and to identify candidates who are not suitable for training in the GEMP programme. This course will be taught by faculty members of the School of Medicine and School of Basic and Biomedical Sciences who should be remunerated for their time. 

6. An entrance examination will be conducted at the end of the Access Course at the School of Medicine, Ho as follows:

Paper 1 – Basic Medical Sciences 

Paper 2 - Scientific Foundations of Medicine 

7 This will be followed with an oral interview, whose conduct will be based on a structured assessment to include a set of defined criteria. All candidates would be interviewed

8 Shortlisted eligible applicants will be admitted into the programme based on their score from the sum of the following: personal statement, entrance examination, and oral interview.
