A Message from the Head of Department
It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the Department of Surgery at University of Health and Allied Sciences. Our Department is committed to excellence in teaching, research and service and we take pride in fostering an environment that encourages innovation, collaboration and personal growth.
As part of our academic community, you will have the opportunity to learn from distinguished faculty, engage in meaningful research and contribute to advancements in your field. We are dedicated to nurturing not only academic and professional success but also integrity, leadership and social responsibility.
The Department’s training programme integrates comprehensive theoretical knowledge with immersive hands-on clinical experience. Students are exposed to a wide spectrum of surgical disciplines, including general surgery, orthopaedics, neurosurgery, cardiothoracic surgery and trauma care, ensuring they acquire both breadth and depth of expertise. State-of-the-art simulation laboratories allow trainees to refine their technical skills in a safe, controlled environment before transitioning to real-world clinical practice under the close guidance of experienced surgeons.
Research and innovation are central to our work. Our faculty and students actively engage in studies aimed at improving surgical techniques, enhancing patient safety, reducing post-operative complications and expanding the possibilities of minimally invasive and robotic surgery. Through national and international collaborations, we contribute to the global advancement of surgical science, ensuring that our patients benefit from the latest evidence-based practices and technologies.
Beyond the operating theatre, our Department places a strong emphasis on teamwork, interdisciplinary collaboration and holistic patient management. We work closely with anaesthetists, nurses, physiotherapists and other specialists to provide comprehensive perioperative care, from pre-surgical evaluation to post-operative rehabilitation. We also actively participate in outreach programmes, delivering essential surgical services to underserved communities and strengthening surgical capacity across Ghana.
Whether you are a new student embarking on your educational journey, a member of staff contributing your expertise, or a collaborator joining hands with us, I encourage you to take full advantage of the opportunities available. Together, we can continue to build a vibrant and dynamic Department that makes a lasting impact within the university and beyond.
On behalf of the Department, I warmly welcome you and look forward to the valuable contributions you will make to our academic family.
