A Message from the Head of Department

I wish to welcome you to the Department of Psychological Medicine & Mental Health at the School of Medicine, University of Health and Allied Sciences. Our Department stands at the forefront of mental health education, research and clinical service in the University, providing a unique platform for training the next generation of mental health professionals. We recognise that health and well-being is not merely the absence of illness but with mental health, which is a vital component of a healthy and productive society.

At the heart of our work is an unwavering commitment to fostering an environment where compassion meets scientific excellence. Our academic programmes are designed to equip students with the knowledge, clinical skills and cultural sensitivity needed to deliver high-quality, person-centred mental health care. Through a blend of classroom learning, clinical rotations, community outreach and interdisciplinary collaboration, we prepare our students to address the mental health challenges that affect individuals across the lifespan.

We take great pride in our research initiatives, which seek to deepen understanding of mental health issues within Ghanaian and African contexts, inform evidence-based interventions and influence policy to improve mental health systems. Our collaborations extend beyond the University, reaching communities, hospitals, schools and international partners to ensure that our work remains both locally relevant and globally informed.

Above all, we are committed to surmounting the stigma surrounding mental health. We believe in promoting open dialogue, empath and inclusion so that individuals feel empowered to seek help without fear or prejudice.

Whether you join us as a student eager to learn, a researcher determined to innovate, a healthcare professional seeking advanced training, or a partner organisation aiming to make a difference, you are most welcome. Together, we can shape a future where mental health services are accessible, effective and responsive to the needs of every individual and community we serve, in Ghana, across Africa and around the world.
