A Message from the Head of Department
It is with great pride and enthusiasm that I welcome you to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Health and Allied Sciences, a centre of excellence where education, research and clinical practice converge to improve the health and well-being of women at every stage of life. Our mission goes beyond the simple transfer of knowledge; we aim to inspire and nurture the next generation of healthcare professionals who will lead the way in transforming women’s healthcare locally, nationally, and globally.
The field of obstetrics and gynaecology occupies a unique and vital role in healthcare, touching on some of the most profound and life-changing moments in a woman’s life, from the miracle of childbirth to the management of complex reproductive health conditions. Our Department is committed to ensuring that students are not only well-versed in the science and art of clinical practice but are also grounded in the values of empathy, respect and dignity for every patient they serve.
Our academic programmes provide comprehensive training in all aspects of maternal and reproductive health, including prenatal care, labour and delivery, postnatal care, fertility management and the treatment of gynaecological disorders. We emphasise hands-on clinical exposure in both high- and low-resource settings, enabling our students to develop adaptability, critical thinking, and resilience in real-world healthcare environments. Through supervised practice in operating theatres, maternity wards and community outreach programmes, our students gain the confidence and competence needed to manage everything from routine pregnancies to complex obstetric emergencies.
Research is an integral part of our mission. Our faculty members lead and participate in pioneering studies addressing maternal and neonatal mortality reproductive endocrinology, assisted reproductive technologies and minimally invasive surgical techniques. By grounding our training in the latest scientific evidence, we ensure that our graduates are equipped to provide care that is both cutting-edge and patient-centred.
Community engagement is another cornerstone of our work. We actively collaborate with governmental and non-governmental organisations to support public health campaigns, promote safe motherhood initiatives and strengthen reproductive health services in underserved areas. We believe that meaningful improvements in women’s healthcare must extend beyond the hospital and into the communities where women live, work and raise families.
Above all, our Department is guided by a vision of creating a healthcare system in which every woman has access to safe, respectful and high-quality care, whether she is giving birth, seeking fertility advice or undergoing treatment for a gynaecological condition. We instil in our students the understanding that their role as healthcare providers is not just to treat illness but to advocate for the rights, dignity and well-being of women everywhere.
Whether you are joining us as a student eager to learn, a researcher committed to innovation, or a partner organisation striving to improve maternal and reproductive health, we warmly welcome you to work alongside us. Together, we can shape a future where women’s health is a priority and every life is given the care it deserves.
