The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology is a centre of excellence dedicated to the advancement of women’s health, specialising in maternal care, pregnancy management, reproductive medicine and the overall physical, emotional and social well-being of women across all stages of life. Its academic and clinical programmes are designed to address the unique healthcare needs of women, from adolescence through to post-menopause, ensuring a continuum of care that is both comprehensive and patient-focused.
The Department offers a robust and integrated curriculum that seamlessly blends foundational medical sciences with advanced obstetric and gynaecological training. Students gain proficiency in essential areas such as prenatal and postnatal care, family planning, fertility management, prevention and treatment of reproductive system disorders and advanced surgical interventions. The teaching approach is grounded in evidence-based medicine, fostering clinical reasoning, diagnostic accuracy and the compassionate delivery of care.
Clinical skills development is a cornerstone of the Department’s educational philosophy. Trainees participate in hands-on rotations across maternity wards, antenatal and postnatal clinics, labour and delivery suites and specialised gynaecology units. These experiences are complemented by simulation-based training in obstetric emergencies, operative procedures and minimally invasive techniques, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared for the realities of practice in both resource-rich and resource-limited settings.
Research plays a pivotal role in the Department’s mission, with faculty and students engaged in studies addressing maternal–foetal medicine, reproductive endocrinology, gynaecological oncology and innovative reproductive technologies. Findings from this research contribute to shaping clinical practice, influencing public health strategies and advancing global knowledge in women’s health.
The Department actively collaborates with hospitals, public health agencies and international research institutions, positioning itself as a leader in improving women’s health outcomes at national, regional and global levels. Through these partnerships, it contributes to the design and implementation of policies and interventions aimed at reducing maternal and neonatal mortality, expanding access to reproductive healthcare, and promoting gender equity in health systems.
By integrating rigorous academic training, exceptional clinical experience, and impactful research, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology ensures that its graduates are not only skilled healthcare providers but also advocates for the health and rights of women everywhere.
Mission
To provide excellence in education, research, and clinical training in maternal health, pregnancy care, and reproductive medicine, equipping students with the knowledge and skills to improve women’s health outcomes globally.
Vision
To be a leading institution in obstetrics and gynaecology education, pioneering innovative research and high-quality patient-centred care in reproductive health.
Functions
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology is dedicated to equipping students and healthcare trainees with the full spectrum of knowledge, technical skills and professional competencies required to provide comprehensive, patient-centred care for women throughout their reproductive lives and beyond. Training covers prenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care, as well as the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of a wide range of gynaecological conditions. By combining theoretical instruction with extensive clinical exposure, the Department ensures that graduates can apply evidence-based practices with confidence and precision in both hospital and community settings.
Students are trained in the latest obstetric and gynaecological procedures, including normal and assisted childbirth, caesarean sections, hysterectomies, laparoscopic interventions and emergency obstetric care. Practical skills are honed through supervised clinical rotations in maternity wards, labour theatres, antenatal clinics and specialised reproductive health units. Simulation-based learning further enhances procedural competency, allowing trainees to practise complex interventions in a safe and controlled environment before working with patients.
Research is a central function of the Department, with faculty and students actively engaged in studies spanning maternal–foetal medicine, reproductive endocrinology, fertility treatments and gynaecological oncology. These research activities aim to generate new clinical insights, refine treatment protocols and contribute to the global body of knowledge on women’s health. Findings are regularly translated into practice through updated clinical guidelines and innovative patient care strategies.
The Department plays a pivotal role in supporting national and international public health initiatives that address maternal and neonatal mortality, recognising these as urgent health priorities. It partners with governmental health agencies, non-governmental organisations, and global health bodies to design and implement interventions such as safe motherhood campaigns, skilled birth attendant training programmes, and emergency obstetric response systems.
Beyond clinical and research functions, the Department is deeply involved in health policy development and advocacy, influencing reproductive health legislation, family planning strategies and women’s health education. It also drives innovations in assisted reproductive technologies, ensuring that couples facing fertility challenges have access to safe, ethical and effective treatment options.
Through its integrated approach to training, research, service delivery and policy engagement, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology not only prepares future healthcare professionals for excellence in practice but also actively contributes to the ongoing advancement of reproductive healthcare systems in Ghana and internationally.
