A Message from the Head of Department

On behalf of the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health at the University of Health and Allied Sciences, it is my distinct honour to welcome you to a place where the health, happiness and future of children are our highest priorities. Our Department is built on the conviction that every child, regardless of background or circumstance, deserves the best possible start in life and we are committed to shaping healthcare professionals who will be unwavering advocates for paediatric well-being both in Ghana and around the world.

Children are not simply small adults; they have unique physiological, developmental and emotional needs that require specialised care. With this understanding, our Department offers a comprehensive and dynamic learning environment that prepares students to meet the full spectrum of paediatric health challenges. From neonatal intensive care units to community immunisation programmes, our training encompasses every stage of childhood, ensuring that our graduates are confident, capable and compassionate in their approach to patient care.

Our academic programmes integrate rigorous theoretical instruction with extensive hands-on clinical exposure. Students gain invaluable experience in diagnosing and managing acute and chronic illnesses, performing life-saving interventions in emergencies and providing preventive care that supports healthy growth and development. We emphasise early disease detection, evidence-based treatment and family-centred care, recognising that the best outcomes for children are achieved when parents, caregivers and communities are active partners in the healthcare journey.

Research is central to our mission. Our faculty lead and contribute to studies that address some of the most pressing paediatric health concerns of our time, from infectious diseases and malnutrition to genetic disorders and childhood cancers. This research not only advances the science of paediatric medicine but also informs public health policy and clinical practice, ensuring that the care we deliver is innovative, effective and grounded in the latest evidence.

Beyond our classrooms and clinics, we are deeply engage with communities through outreach programmes, health education initiatives and partnerships with local and international organisations. These efforts aim to strengthen health systems, improve vaccination coverage and reduce preventable childhood illnesses and deaths. We take pride in fostering a spirit of service among our students, encouraging them to view their future roles as both clinicians and advocates for child health equity.

As you join our Department, whether as a student eager to learn, a researcher seeking discovery, or a collaborator committed to paediatric care, you become part of a community dedicated to safeguarding the health of the next generation. Together, we will work towards a future in which every child can grow, thrive and reach their fullest potential.
