Department of Microbiology and Immunology

The Department of Microbiology and Immunology is a cornerstone of biomedical science, dedicated to advancing our understanding of microorganisms, immune responses and their profound impact on human health. Our work lies at the intersection of medicine, research and public health, providing critical knowledge and expertise essential for preventing, diagnosing and managing infectious and immune-mediated diseases.

We explore the complex and dynamic interactions between pathogens and their human hosts, shedding light on the mechanisms of infection, the body’s immune defence systems and the factors that influence disease outcomes. Special emphasis is placed on studying emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance and the development of vaccines and novel therapeutics, issues that are increasingly vital in the context of global health security.

Our Department integrates advanced microbiological methods, molecular biology and immunological assays to ensure accurate laboratory diagnostics and comprehensive disease surveillance. From identifying bacterial, viral, fungal and parasitic pathogens to characterising immune responses, we provide the scientific foundation that underpins effective clinical decision-making and public health interventions.

Beyond the laboratory, our research extends into communities, hospitals and environmental settings to investigate patterns of disease transmission, outbreak dynamics and the impact of public health interventions. We collaborate extensively with national health agencies, international organisations and academic institutions to strengthen disease control programmes and to contribute to global networks for epidemic preparedness and response.

As an academic Department, we play a vital role in training the next generation of medical and health science professionals. Students receive rigorous theoretical instruction complemented by hands-on laboratory training, equipping them with the skills to conduct high-quality research, interpret diagnostic data and apply evidence-based approaches in clinical and public health settings.

Through our commitment to scientific excellence, innovation and collaboration, the Department of Microbiology and Immunology continues to be a driving force in combating infectious diseases, advancing immunological science and safeguarding the health of populations in Ghana, across Africa and worldwide.

Mission
To equip students with the knowledge and practical skills needed to understand microbial pathogens, immune responses and infection control, thereby contributing to effective disease prevention and treatment.

Vision
To be a leading centre of excellence in microbiological and immunological research, driving innovations in infectious disease management and immunotherapy.

Functions
The Department of Microbiology and Immunology provides comprehensive training in microbial identification, immune response mechanisms and diagnostic microbiology through interactive lectures, hands-on laboratory sessions and clinical case studies. We conduct high-impact research on infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, vaccine development and emerging pathogens to strengthen prevention and treatment strategies.

The Department plays an active role in supporting hospital infection control programmes and public health initiatives, offering expertise in outbreak investigations, biosafety and epidemiological surveillance. Our diagnostic services in microbiology and immunology support clinical departments with accurate and timely detection of infectious diseases. We maintain strong collaborations with healthcare institutions, government agencies and research organisations to inform policies and guidelines for infectious disease control. By integrating molecular biology, genetic analysis, bioinformatics and data analytics into microbiological research and diagnostics, we enhance precision in pathogen detection and immune system evaluation. In addition, we provide continuous education and professional development opportunities for medical students, laboratory scientists and healthcare professionals, ensuring the sustained advancement of microbiology and immunology expertise in Ghana and beyond.
