Dr. Joseph Kwame Korpisah is Head of the Physician Assistantship Programme, School of Medicine, University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS). He joined UHAS in 2013 and his principal focus has been in Anatomy, Surgery and Orthopaedics. He is a member of the West African Orthopaedic Association, an associate member of the Dutch Orthopaedic Association, a very experienced Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgeon and a Senior Lecturer at UHAS.
EDUCATION
He completed his medical education in Ukraine, then USSR. He later entered the West African post graduate program where he obtained a fellowship of the West African College of Surgeons in Orthopaedics and Trauma.
WORKING EXPERIENCE
As one of the most experienced and dedicated clinicians in the Volta Region, he has been practicing in the region for the past 22 years. He started as a Medical Officer at St. Anthony’s Catholic Hospital, Dzodze in 1994 (One of 6 new Doctors posted to the Volta region that year). He later became the Senior Medical Officer in charge from 1999 to 2001. During the period, apart from rendering general clinical services as the head of the District Hospital, he was also a member of the then Ketu District Health Management Team. He later left for post graduate studies. During his course at Korle-bu he made regular week end trips to offer his expertise to the District. At the end of the course, he came back and established from scratch a complete Orthopaedic and Trauma Centre, along with some collaboration from expatriate Orthopaedic Surgeons from Maastricht University, the Netherlands. He served as the Medical Director at St Anthony’s Hospital, Dzodze from 2011. He was one time the vice president of Ghana Medical Association, Volta Branch. He joined UHAS as a part-time lecturer in 2013 and has been teaching Anatomy, Surgery and Orthopaedics to Physician Assistants and Medical students. He became a full Senior Member in September 2015. From September 2015 to May 2016, he acted as Dean of the School of Medicine, UHAS. He was appointed Head of Physician Assistanship Programme in September 2016.
SCIENCE /RESEARCH OUTPUT
His area of interest is Clinical Orthopaedics, Limb deformities and their methods of correction. He has one recent publication in a peer-reviewed journal. Other research interests include “Causative flora in bone and joint infections in Southern Volta, Survey of trauma patterns in patients involved in road traffic accidents, Patronage and preference of Traditional bone setters by Orthopaedic and Trauma patients, among others. He has also been involved in the Trainer of Trainers for management of clubfoot for Africa project.
