PROFILE OF PROFESSOR FRANK EDWIN
Professor Frank Edwin is Dean of the School of Medicine, effective 1st August 2021. He is a cardiothoracic surgeon, professor of surgery and Head of the Cardiothoracic Center, School of Medicine, UHAS. He joined the UHAS team in November 2016. Prior to joining UHAS, he worked at the National Cardiothoracic Centre of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra as a consultant cardiothoracic surgeon for 12 years during which time he also sub-specialized as a paediatric and congenital heart surgeon. He continues to serve as consultant to the National Cardiothoracic Center and the Ho Teaching Hospital’s Cardiothoracic Centre.
Professor Edwin had his basic medical education at the University of Ghana Medical School. He subsequently obtained a Diploma of Anaesthesia of the West African College of Surgeons (WACS) after which he completed the WACS Fellowship training in cardiothoracic surgery while working at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. He proceeded to subspecialty training in paediatric and congenital heart surgery at the Walter Sisulu Paediatric Cardiac Centre for Africa in Johannesburg, South Africa. He was subsequently elected as Fellow of the Ghana College of Surgeons.
After the mandatory one year housemanship experience, Professor Edwin worked as Medical Officer in the Department of Surgery, Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. He then moved to the Department of Anaesthesia to complete a one year period working to obtain the Diploma of Anaesthesia. Afterwards, he was transferred to Ridge Hospital in Accra as Deputy Chief of Anaesthesia for 6 months prior to beginning Fellowship training in cardiothoracic surgery. Following qualification as cardiothoracic surgeon, he worked for 5 years as Senior Specialist at the National Cardiothoracic Centre before being engaged as paediatric cardiac surgery fellow at the Walter Sisulu Paediatric Cardiac Centre in Johannesburg, South Africa. As consultant cardiothoracic surgeon, the major focus of his work is paediatric and congenital heart surgery.
Professor Frank Edwin’s research is predominantly in the field of paediatric and congenital heart surgery. He has published over 60 peer-reviewed papers in scientific journals (available here). He has contributed to two book chapters {in BAJA’s Principles and Practice of Surgery including Pathology in the Tropics (E.Q. Archampong, S.B. Naaeder, and B. Ugwu., editors) and in Current Challenges with their Evolving Solutions in Surgical Practice in West Africa (J.N. Clegg-Lamptey, V.A. Essuman, J.C.B. Dakubo, E.Q. Archampong., editors)}.
Professor Edwin is a member of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), a founding member of the World Society for Paediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery, and founding member and President of the African Society for Paediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery. He is currently the Secretary of the World Society for Paediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery and member of the European Association for Cardiothoracic Surgery. He serves on the Editorial Committees of the World Journal for Paediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery, the Pan African Medical Journal, and the Ghana Medical Journal. He has been involved in the development and maintenance of the World Database for Paediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery for the purposes of furthering knowledge concerning the global practice and outcomes of paediatric and congenital heart surgery, and promoting scientific investigation and publication based on analyses of the World Database, with collaboration among a wide array of international colleagues.
